BECI ORPIN’S “A CHRISTMAS TALE” TO SCREEN
IN FED SQUARE
30 November 2018
Melbourne-based visual artist and designer Beci Orpin, in collaboration with film makers General Strike, has created an original animated Christmas film as part of Fed Square’s Christmas celebrations.
Specially created for the new state-of-the-art Digital Facade in Fed Square, ‘A Christmas Tale’ is a 10-minute animation that brings to life a playful package of a traditional and modern Christmas.
This is Beci Orpin’s first foray into film, whose quintessentially playful style has graced everything from Gorman textiles to Swanston Street Metro billboards.
‘A Christmas Tale’ plays on Australia’s fusion of influences surrounding Christmas including a wintery European tradition, a biblical story, and Aussie summer holidays at the beach.
A modern Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus make an appearance – but instead of a donkey there’s a ute, and instead of a stable, there’s a tent; and the new born baby is welcomed by a kangaroo and an emu.
A whimsical forest scene provides glimpses of Australia’s wonderful and unique fauna and flora- from flying possums and dropping spiders to Sturt’s Desert Peas.
Beci Orpin said: “My favourite part of creating this work was drawing and making the native animals and plants. I’d forgotten how cute animals like quolls and numbats are. I also discovered some facts along the way – did you know numbats eat 20,000 termites a day!”
Playful and touching, the film reminds viewers of the true gifts of Christmas: families, friends and community.
Five special film screenings will feature live performances by Melbourne choirs including Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir, Melbourne Indie Voices, MGLC ShOUT and McYouth Choir.
‘A Christmas Tale’ is General Strike’s latest film custom-designed for Fed Square’s Digital Facade. The Melbourne creative studio had produced several launch films for the new screen, including ‘Story Type’ a typographic animation celebrating Melbourne’s literary heritage.
’A Christmas Tale’ was commissioned by Fed Square and the City of Melbourne as part of Christmas Square.
