Ana Diction

Ana Diction is a boylesque/draglesque performer and female impersonator (or female embodiment) who plays on gender and drag. Ana who goes by the name of Harley, is a Kulin person who speaks the Dja Dja Wurrung language. Ana is currently working and being mentored as a community linguist whose responsibility is research and working with different Aboriginal languages groups in Victoria. Ana moved to Naarrm (Melbourne) six years ago to study a double major in Archaeology and Linguistics. Ana completed their undergraduate and honours. Languages in Victoria are considered endangered. Not many people fluently speak their language because it has been forgotten through the effects of colonisation. However, Ana solely went to university to be able to learn the tools from linguistics to be able to revive and reclaim the sleeping Dja Dja Wurrung language.

Growing up in Bendigo and being effect by homophobic behaviour, Ana has always had support from family and friends. Especially those who are part of the local Aboriginal community. This is one of the reasons why Ana had choose violence against Aboriginal women as an advocacy when they entered in the Miss Gay Australian pageant. Aboriginal women have always been strong and resilient in Ana’s life.

Melbourne has given Harley the opportunity to express their homosexuality and experience the LBGTIQA community. It also open doors to do drag and learn different forms of dancing.
